Black and Red Rock Boring Urchins

Echinometra lucunter lucunter

Very common in shallow water. They bore protective holes in the rocks and dead coral for protection during the day and feed on algae during the night. Although it seems like they never move, when disturbed it's quite amazing both how and how fast they can move. They have short, thick, pointed spines. they average about 2 inches in diameter.
