Beaded Sea Anemone

Epicystis crucifer

Highly variable in color. These were all found in between 4 and 6 feet of water most often in a semi-sheltered area. They are carnivores. They also are known as Flower sea anemones and Rock sea anemones. Not known to be toxic, but if disturbed will quickly withdraw their oral disc below the surface. Unlike other sea anemones, these don't travel around much. If they find a place they like, they stay there. To me there seems to be several species under this one name. It's unfortunate that there is such a shortage of funds for the work of taxonomists (people who categorize, classify and give scientific names to things) here in the Caribbean.
