Blackbar Soldierfish

Myripristis jacobus

The Blackbar Soldierfish is a member of the Squirrelfish family, but their coloring is different. Instead of the horizontal stripes like the Squirrelfishes, their body color is a solid deep, rich orange to pale red color with the black vertical bar crossing their gill cover. The almost iridescent sky blue fin tips and sad eyes make them one of my favorite fishes. They are found hiding near reef openings and under low overhangs where they feel safe resting during the day. Often seen in many numbers and/or schooling with other Squirrelfishes. Found at depths of 5 feet or more. They can will grow to about 8 inches.
